Birds of Chicago, who played at Tønder Festival in 2019, are back, with their classic americana spiced with elements of soul, blues, gospel and roots rock. Birds of Chicago are Allison Russell, vocal and guitar, and JT Nero, vocal and guitar. Allison Russell is from Canada, and JT Nero from USA. Both worked with other bands before teaming up in 2011. Their first album, Birds of Chicago, appeared in 2012. Their show at Folk Alliance in Memphis set things in motion, and the following years Birds of Chicago were busy touring and recording. In 2018, they made the record Love in Wartime, produced by Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) with JT Nero. As the title suggests, the album contains songs of love and hope in turbulent times. “We want to give folk some rare good news and a chance to dance as they listen,” as Allison Russell puts it. As well as her work with Birds of Chicago, Allison Russell is part of the Songs of our Native Daughters project with Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah and Leyla McCalla. Their only Danish festival concert in 2020.
