Mónika Lakatos and The Gipsy Voices, based in Budapest in Hungary, is an eight-piece with a repertoire of traditional Olah gypsy music. Many will recognise the singer, Mónika Lakatos, who has performed at Tønder Festival several times with the band Romengo. Mónika Lakatos is a star of this style, and has won awards, among them The Ethnic Minority Award in 2014 and The Anna Lindh Award in 2007. Mónika Lakatos’ first solo album Romanimo, from 2018, consists of a collection of Olah gypsy ballads. The album won fourth place in the World Music Charts Europe. “Gipsy Voices is our presentation of the unique voice of our style, using vocal techniques learned from the age-old Olah gypsy music. We hope our concerts will attract younger generations to this music,” says Mónika Lakatos. Their only Danish festival concert in 2020.
