Lankum (IRL)

Saturday 25 of August: Bolero: 11:15
Music Programme 2018

The name comes from the traditional ballad False Lankum, and the old songs are centre stage in Lankum’s music. Lankum have previously performed at Tønder Festival and venues in Denmark under the name Lynched, and the name is all that has changed. The group still consists of brothers Ian and Daragh Lynch, with Cormac MacDiarmada and Radie Peat, and they still work with traditional songs, sung in harmony and accompanied on uillean pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, violin and guitar. Inspired by folk music legends like Frank Harte, Planxty, The Dubliners and The Watersons, Lankum also add touches of American oldtime, ambient techno, psychedelic folk, black metal, drone and rock’n’roll. Their debut record Cold Old Fire came out in 2015 and won three nominations at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2016. After the name change, in 2017 Lankum released Between the Earth and Sky. Most recently, Lankum has won two awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2018.
