Time and time again, Tønder Festival has been fortunate enough to entice the best Scottish folk rock bands to town for our audience. Skipinnish is one of them. They took no prisoners when they performed here two years ago, so now they are back. Two jubilees meet: Tønder Festival’s 50th and Skipinnish’ 25th. Skipinnish sounds of bagpipes, accordion and fiddle on a solid bank of bass, drums and keyboards, modern Celtic music in a stylish blend of rich traditions and up-to-date rock. To begin with, accordionist Angus MacPhail met piper Andrew Stevenson in 1999, at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama i Glasgow. Both are from the Highlands and Islands, Tiree and Lochaber respectively. Skipinnish soon established their name on the Scots folk music scene. They have made a series of albums, the latest being Steer by the Stars from 2019. The band’s singer, Norrie MacIver, formerly of Bodega and Mànran, joined Skipinnish in 2016, taking over from Robert Robertson, who today sings with Tide Lines. The other members in Skpinnish: Rory Grindlay, drums, Charlotte Printer, bass, Alistair Iain Paterson, piano, Archie McAllister, violin. Their only Danish festival in 2024.
