He lives in Scotland, but Ciarán Ryan’s family background and musical formation are Irish. He grew up with the Irish music tradition running in his veins. This is clearly heard in his first solo release, the album Banjaxed (2020), where his roots are infused with music from other folk sources. Ciarán Ryan is primarily a master of the tenor banjo, but he also plays violin, guitar and mandolin. He is in demand as a session musician and has worked with Allan Holmes & The Embers, Salsa Celtica and the famous folk/world band Dallahan, who played at Tønder Festival in 2017. Ciarán Ryan’s band has Sam Mabbett on accordion; Chris Waite, guitar; Bev Morris, bass; and Donald Hay, drums and percussion.
