Their last visit to Tønder Festival in 2012 proved that there is reason to expect great things of the return of the Canadian band The Deep Dark Woods. Fronted by singer and guitarist Ryan Boldt, The Deep Dark Woods deliver original songs with respect for the artistry, the narration and the traditions. They reference Scots and Irish folk songs and American country blues, there is also space for surrealism, emotive murder ballads and close vocal harmonies. The Deep Dark Woods originated in Saskatchewan and are now based on Canada’s eastern seaboard. Critics have compared the band to other Canadian musicians – The Band, Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot – but Nick Cave has been referenced. too. The Deep Dark Woods’ third album The Place I Left Behind from 2012 won two Canadian music prizes, and the next album Yarrow from 2017 was nominated for a Canadian JUNO Award. Their latest album, from May 2021, is called Changing Faces.
