Their Tønder Festival debut was planned for 2020, but now they are here. When sister and brother Sara and Sean Watkins started the Nickel Creek band with mandolin player Chris Thile, they launched what was to prove one of the most successful constellations in American folk music. In 2007, when Nickel Creek called it a day, Sean and Sara moved on to new projects. Alongside their solo careers, Sean played in Fiction Family, a duo with guitarist Jon Foreman, and Sara played violin for The Decemberists and John Mayer, among others. In 2018, she hooked up with Aoife O’Donovan (from Crooked Still) and Sarah Jarosz in the trio I’m With Her. Sara and Sean would meet up occasionally at the Largo club in Los Angeles, where they held the Watkins Family Hour, inviting musical pals to share the stage. In 2015, they released Watkins Family Hour, a collection of covers including Dylan’s Going, Going, Gone and Grateful Dead’s Brokedown Palace. The spring of 2020 sees the release of Brother Sister, wherein Sara and Sean have written all the material.
