FOLKSPOT: Hvalfugl (DK)

A musical universe of sublime beauty

Hvalfugl is a trio from Aarhus that creates music defined by a shimmering sense of presence, ambient textures, and lyrical melodies.

Since their debut in 2017, the trio has established itself as one of Denmark’s most distinctive instrumental groups, with a sound that moves freely across genres. Hvalfugl combines tightly woven interplay with dreamy ambient atmospheres and patiently unfolding musical narratives, where beautiful melodies slowly reveal themselves to the listener.

The trio consists of Jonathan Fjord Bredholt (piano and harmonium), Jeppe Lavsen (guitar), and Anders Juel Bomholt (double bass). Their interplay balances warm acoustic tones with subtle use of effects, creating a distinct musical expression that is both intimate and insistent.

As a live ensemble, Hvalfugl is known for their presence and their ability to create immersive experiences. Audiences are invited into a musical universe of sublime beauty, where compositions merge into cohesive and captivating journeys that both move and inspire. Their live performances were particularly recognized in 2025, when they received the award for Live Act of the Year at DMA Jazz.

Over the years, Hvalfugl has positioned itself as a trio in constant evolution, continuously exploring new musical directions. On their latest double LP release ‘Bag Vore Øjne Strømmer Drømme Sagte Forbi’ (2025), they bring together three years of work and EP releases into a single cohesive work. With curiosity and a desire to experiment - both with new musical ideas and guest musicians—the album expands the trio’s sonic universe with even more unique elements.
