Poul Krebs opens Tønder Festival 2026

Published 9th July 2026

The much-loved singer-songwriter turns 70 this year

At Tønder Festival, he takes the stage with his regular band and a repertoire spanning both well-known classics and new material.

This year's opening concert on the Open Air Stage is delivered by a danish legend: Poul Krebs. The much-loved singer-songwriter turns 70 this year and looks back on a long and significant musical life, in which he has drawn audiences together with his songs and stories for decades. At Tønder Festival, he takes the stage with his regular band and a repertoire spanning both well-known classics and new material.

"It's a great pleasure to welcome Poul Krebs as this year's opening act. He represents something central to Tønder Festival: presence, strong storytelling and the sense of community around the songs. That's why he's the obvious choice to set the tone for four days of music and experiences in Tønder," says Maria Theessink, artistic director and press manager at Tønder Festival.

The festival programme also features artists such as Daniel Lanois, Ron Sexsmith, Jake Blount and Sunny War, while the festival's tribute concert, Kris Kristofferson Tribute, brings together strong musicians around the songs of one of American music's greatest songwriters. Audiences can also look forward to Bye Bye Brenda and many more, underlining the breadth and quality of this year's programme.

Applause welcomes the first guests

When the gates to Tønder Festival 2026 open on Wednesday 26 August at 12.00, the festival's volunteers will, true to tradition, be ready with a round of applause for the first guests. At 12.15, the festival is officially opened on the Open Air Stage, where the Mayor of Tønder, Jørgen Popp Petersen, together with former Tønder mayor and incoming Speaker of the Folketing, Henrik Frandsen, will welcome the audience and declare the festival open. Poul Krebs then takes the stage to play this year's opening concert.

The applauding volunteers at the entrance have become one of Tønder Festival's strongest trademarks — a moment many festivalgoers look forward to year after year. The applause is both a welcome to the audience and a greeting from the nearly 3,000 volunteers who form the festival's foundation and beating heart.

After the official opening, four days of folk, roots, americana and country from around the world await.
