Tønder Festival's artistic director promises a magical Friday evening, when the winner of four Grammies, americana legend Lyle Lovett and his acoustic band take the stage at this year's festival.
Some know Lyle Lovett as the legendary singer, songwriter and composer from Texas, who has his own way of combining country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues to redefine American music. Others will recognize him as the film actor from movies like Robert Altman's The Player (1992).
Those who pay close attention will likely recall that he was briefly married to filmstar Julia Roberts. Or that he was forced to take a break from touring because of a broken leg: a complicated fracture resulting from a bull attack on his uncle's farm. At any rate, it is beyond doubt that Lyle Lovett does not fit into your usual categories.
And when he and his acoustic band play one single concert in Denmark in 2025, you owe it to yourself to be there.
Storytelling, humour and a musical world
Since the release of his eponymous debut album in 1986, Lyle Lovett has made 13 albums, developing into one of the livliest and most iconic artists in American music. He has won four Grammy awards, was the first to be presented with the Trailblazer Award by the Americana Music Association and has been appointed Texas State Musician.
Between 2012 and 2022, Lyle Lovett took time off recording to focus on family life. And after a decade, he stormed back with the album 12th of June (2022), which includes an emotional ballad to his twins, born on that date five years earlier.
Musically or in any other respect, 67 year-old Lyle Lovett has never given much for conventions. Throughout his music career and his eclectic back catalogue, he is known for his personal reflections, his storytelling, humour, musical width of range and his charismatic stage performance.
A Magical Concert Awaits
Tønder Festival's artistic director, Maria Theessink, has long nourished the dream to present Lyle Lovett at Tønder Festival. When they met on a verandah in Nashville in USA, the two had to have a talk.
Maria says: “Lyle Lovett is a legend. And when you see him live on stage, he has enormous charisma and intense contact to his audience. Irrespective of your musical tastes, this will be a magical concert which you must not miss when he takes plays live here on Friday evening with his acoustic band.”

Whether touring in a duo format, with his acoustic band or with his 'big band’, Lyle Lovett's live performances demonstrate both the breadth of his talent and his extraordinary charisma, presence and knack of reaching out to his audience.
Since his eponymous debut album in 1986, Lyle Lovett has grown to be one of americana music's livliest and most iconic artists. Besides four Grammies, he has won the Americana Music Association's first Trailblazer Award and has been apted Texas State Musician.
Between 2012 and 2022, Lyle Lovett took a break from recording to concentrate on his family life. After a decade away, he returned with a vengeance with the album 12th of June (2022), which includes the moving ballad to his twins, born on 12 June 2017.
