Tønder Festival presents Daniel Lanois

Published 24th October 2025

His only show in Denmark in 2026

Canadian creator of a legendary sound

Tønder Festival is delighted to announce that the world-famous Canadian musician and producer Daniel Lanois is coming to our festival in 2026. It will be his only show in Denmark next year.

Daniel Lanois is noted for his ability to weave soundscapes that are simultaneously intimate and grandiose. Since the 1980s, he has made his indelible mark on the world of music, both as a solo artist and as a producer.

His characteric sound, recognisable for its deeply resonating guitars, experimental layering and a cinematic sense of atmosphere, has inspired generations of musicians. Alongside his solo career, Daniel Lanois has had a huge influence as a producer, working with some of the biggest names in music history.

"It has been something I have wanted for years, to bring Daniel Lanois to Tønder. He is a legendary musician – his debut album Acadie from 1989 still sounds completely fresh. But besides that, he is, to my mind, one of the best producers, having worked with Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson," says Tønder Festival's artistic director, Maria Theessink.

This booking fits perfectly Tønder Festival's ambition to give our audiences the opportunity to see and hear international legends, giving them unforgettable, top-rank musical experiences without the usual festival barriers.

Daniel Lanois will play at Tønder Festival with his small band, which will allow you to enjoy his musical presence up close. On stage, he will showcase both his singer-songwriter persona and his experimental sounds. He will also be taking part in the Gentlemen’s Circle.

THE MUSICIAN:

The Canadian producer, composer and guitarist Daniel Lanois is famous for his particular spacious, atmospheric sound, which has influenced rock, folk and ambient music for four decades.

Born in Hull, Québec in 1951, he grew up in Ontario and at an early age started making music in a home studio, later founding the celebrated Grant Avenue Studio, where he developed his production style.

As a producer he embraces both extravagant pop and more tangible, experimental sound surfaces and has had a defining touch on iconic recordings. In close collaboration with Brian Eno he helped create U2’s sound on The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, and he has produced or co-produced recordings by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson.

As well as all that producing, Daniel Lanois has released his own music: instrumental and atmospheric albums illustrating his fascination with effects and spatial textures. His work has been rewarded many times, including several Grammies.

At Tønder Festival, his only show in Denmark in 2026, you will experience an intimate sonic world of pedal steel and guitar, backed by his small band.
