An unmistakeable Nordic folk tone rings in Helene Dorthea Tungelund's vocal chords and her Celtic harp. Through a tangle of electronic circuits grow loops, ambience and beats. Tungelund fronts the emerging folk music collaboration Sylfide, who won two Danish Music Awards Roots statuettes in 2022 in the New Danish Roots Name of the Year and the Danish Roots Track of the Year categories. Sylfide was also nominated in the Danish Roots Release category. Last year, Sylfide won the Helge of the Year, presented to a folk song writer with social awareness. Besides Helene Dorthea Tungelund, vocal and Celtic harp, Sylfide is Jonathan Fjord, piano, synth; Jonas Clausen, violin, and Emil Nielsen, bass. Their debut EP from 2022 contains patently Scandinavian folk tunes and songs, with contemporary lyrics dealing with topics and concerns great and small. Themes include the climate crisis, feminism and our divided society, Sylfide thus combining modern activism and deep folk music roots.
