Folk Tales: Jubilee Project

Discover the festival’s essence through over 50 portraits crafted in text and wood.

Folk Tales is a collective portrait of Tønder Festival as seen through the eyes of our amazing audience, performers, and volunteers.

Since 2017, artists Søren Assenholt and Sanne Flyvbjerg have explored the festival’s DNA through meetings and conversations with musicians, volunteers, local historians, and other good people.

The project is aptly named FOLK TALES, as it is the community spirit and social cohesion that drive the work.

On the occasion of Tønder Festival’s 50th anniversary, celebrated in 2024, a comprehensive art project was launched in 2017 to portray Tønder Festival through the eyes of its audience, volunteers, and musicians. Over the past seven years, this has resulted in more than 50 portraits created in both prose and wood.

The installation consists of wood carvings and writings about people, thoughts, and memories from the past, with a special focus each year. In 2024, the portraits highlighted the stories and experiences of the audience. In previous years, musicians and volunteers were the subjects of the annual carvings.

Since 2017, Søren Assenholt and Sanne Flyvbjerg have been creating portraits at the festival. The material for these portraits has been gathered over the years at the festival itself, from local historians, and through correspondence with the audience.

The art collection can be seen each year at Tønder Festival.

Thanks to everyone who has participated.
