Tønder Festival 2019 will feature a whole range of music with French connections. There will be music from Quebec in Canada, Louisiana in USA and Brittany in France. And more new Tønder Festival bands and soloists have been announced, too.
Cajun and zydeco music from Louisiana and folk music from north-eastern Canada have always been extremely popular at Tønder Festival, and this year, music with French roots takes up a special space in the programme.
From USA and Canada
This year, cajun music will be represented at Tønder Festival by Joel
Savoy with Jesse Lége and Kelli Jones. Louisiana cajun music is directly
descended from the Acadians, displaced inhabitants of the French colony
Acadie in north-eastern Canada. That part of the world has often sent
traditional music to Tønder Festival, and 2019 is no exception, with Les
Poules à Colin, Vishtèn and Shaun Ferguson on the programme.
Breton fest-noz and Caribbean tones
The guitarist Pascal Danaë, from Guadaloupe in the Caribbean, lives in
France. He is appearing at Tønder Festival with his band Delgres. From
Brittany we have two really exciting names destined to set feet
a-dancing: Plantec and Startijenn.
Last but not least
From Scotland, Breabach are coming, and from USA, promising newcomers
Susto. And a warm welcome back to audience favourites Hudson Taylor from
Ireland.
Musician Interviews Podcasts
The French theme at Tønder Festival will be highlighted and elaborated
on in a series of podcasts which you can download or stream from tf.dk.
Here you can learn more about music from Louisiana, north-eastern Canada
and Brittany and find interviews with some of the Francophone musicians
appearing at this year’s Tønder Festival. The podcasts are the work of
journalist Claus Vittus.
Pre-festival Events
The music is not the only show in town. In connection with Tønder
Festival, a multitude of activities are on offer in the Tønder area in
the four days up to Tønder Festival. The 4+ concept has been a huge
success, and the events on offer from 18th – 21st August 2019 will be
launched at a free opening concert on 18th August. The ensuing programme
invites participants to a wide variety of activities focussing on the
local countryside, culture, history, food and drink. See more at tf.dk.
