Tønder Festival Scores Musical Gold

23rd February 2023

The 2023 Tønder Festival programme is taking shape, and it's looking good.

Ten more Danish and international groups and soloists are now booked, among them top American musicians Sarah Jarosz, Nickel Creek and Joachim Cooder.

Many no doubt recall the fine concerts given by American songwriter Sarah Jarosz at Tønder Festival in 2011 and 2017. Now even more of you can enjoy this Grammy-winning musician when she returns this year.

Another treat will be Joachim Cooder, American songwriter and musician, son of guitarist Ry Cooder. Joachim Cooder who will be here with his band. More treasures in store: string band trio Nickel Creek, Chris Thile and brother and sister team Sara and Sean Watkins. From Austin, Texas, USA, come Shane Smith & The Saints, playing elegantly stylish country and americana, and from Virginia, USA, the Hackensaw Boys blow a roots-music tornado across the fens.

The music scene in Scotland is, as always, a fertile field for folk, and Tønder Festival has picked two powerful folk bands, Mec Lir and Gnoss.

A regular and outstanding element at Tønder Festivals for years, the Dano-German FolkBALTICA Ensemble, will show us once again this year what the finest young folk musicians in the border country are capable of. True to form, Tønder Festival has a finger on the pulse of new Danish folk-roots music, presenting two names on their way up: the songwriter William Torp and the quartet Baby Did A Bad Thing.
